Interesting....

Here is an article from The Denver Post, dated 3/13/3009:

Commerce City police officers shot two gunmen Thursday afternoon after a car chase that began with a robbery on a quiet residential street.

"Both suspects were armed," said Commerce City Police Lt. Chuck Saunier. "Both suspects were wounded."

One of the suspects, Peter Ramierez, 23, died at a local hospital. Adams County coroner Jim Hibbard said that until an autopsy is conducted this afternoon, he could not say for certain how many times Ramirez was shot.

No one else was hurt.

The trouble started just before 4 p.m. near the corner of East 107th Avenue and Kalispell Street. Christina Gomez, who lives in the neighborhood, said her husband, Eduardo, was driving home when a white car smashed into his Nissan Armada.

He stepped from his vehicle and was confronted by two men with guns who ordered him to the ground.

The men demanded his wallet and a cache of cellphones in his vehicle. He sells the phones over the Internet, his wife said, and he quickly concluded that the men had been following him.

As he lay in the road, the men rifled through his vehicle. At that point, he jumped to his feet, ran down the street and hid in a neighbor's garage.

"He was pretty shaken up over it," Christina Gomez said.

Saunier said two officers in the area in an unmarked sedan responded to a 911 call. They saw the suspects' white Toyota and chased it out of the neighborhood toward Chambers Road. At one point, the Toyota jumped the curb, mowed down several small trees and a street sign and then continued west to Chambers.

A short time later, at the intersection of East 120th Avenue and Chambers Road, the Toyota ground to a halt, missing its left front wheel.

The two men in the Toyota jumped out and ran west along 120th Avenue, attempting to grab another vehicle in the midst of the afternoon rush hour near several housing developments and the Buffalo Run Golf Course.

The detectives followed and gunfire erupted. Saunier said it was too early to know whether the suspects fired at the officers.

The incident led police to close East 120th Avenue from Buckley Road west to Sable Road. Chambers Road also was closed in the area through rush hour.

The shooting is under investigation by several agencies, including the Adams County Sheriff's Office.

Christina Gomez was thankful that her husband was not hurt and was especially grateful that he did not stop on his way home to pick up their two young children, as he had been thinking about doing.

"I was very thankful that he was the one to call me, that it wasn't someone else calling me to say that he had been shot," she said.

Denver Post staff writer Bruce Finley contributed to this report.

You may say, "Ho hum, another shooting in Commercy City..." However, the section of "Commerce City" where the shooting took place was actually near Reunion, a very upscale neighborhood, and a very safe area. How do I know this? Take a look at this map:
View Larger Map Point B is where the action all started (the car-jacking), located in the Reunion Subdivision

Point A is where it all ended with the police shooting

Point C is our house. YES, OUR HOUSE!!!

All of this took place less than half a mile from where we live! Buckley Road (mentioned in the above article) is how I get home from work. I turn to left to get home at the intersection of 120th and Chambers. Since the roads were blocked off, I had to go towards the airport and come home a very long way around. It took me almost an hour to get home, when it normally takes 10 minutes.

Shootings and car-jackings really are NOT common in this area. It made me think we were living in L.A. or something! It's not like we live near the scary, bad part of downtown Denver or anything. This just makes me more anxious to get through school and come back to Idaho, where it's safe :)

I'm sure Boise isn't crime-free either. You just need to keep your head down and remember material things can be replaced, people can't.
